Don’t Know Where You’re Heading? Five Game-Changing Questions To Move You Forward

Your organisation is going through major change and you’re wondering what the impact will be for you and your job, or your next career move. You’re not sure what, if anything, you could do / should do. Anyway, you’re flat out busy and you haven’t got time to do anything except pedal as hard as you can.

So you say to yourself “There’s nothing I can do, I’ll just have to wait and see what happens”. Which is, to be blunt, pretty much like crossing your fingers and hoping for the best. And a bit like our friend Alice in Wonderland here.

Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” said Alice.

That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat. I don’t much care where…” said Alice. Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat. So long as I get SOMEWHERE,” Alice added. Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.

Yes, of course you’ll get somewhere if you just keep on going, but will it turn out to be where you want to go? Maybe yes, maybe no, it all depends!

5 Really Important Questions To Ask Yourself

Of course you’re busy, but are you too busy to take a few minutes out to reflect on these 5 potentially game changing questions? How about your journey to work; walking the dog; over that coffee in your favourite coffee shop; on that cycle ride / run / walk you promised you would start? Etc. etc.

Keep a notebook handy to jot down your insights, draw mind maps or whatever scribbles work you - this will help you to ‘see’ what you’re thinking.

  1. What do you want your life to be like? Do you have a vision for the next chapter of your life, or perhaps a bigger game plan? Dust off the hopes, fears, dreams you’ve been carrying round, for however many years and decide if they are still relevant to you or not.

  2. Who are you now, versus five, ten or fifteen years ago and what really matters most to you now?

  3. Do you have a mission to fulfil? What is it?

  4. What do you need to be happy and fulfilled at work? Look at every angle; purpose, role, job content, people, culture, location, environment, money etc.

  5. How do you plan to make the life you want actually happen?

Consider what part your current organisation and any changes play in your future vision. Maybe the changes will give you the experience you need; enable you to develop new skills; build your reputation; or simply the chance to do what you love doing. Or on the other hand, maybe they will take you in the wrong direction and so this an opportunity to change job, employer or career direction in order to move another step closer to your dream.

Whatever emerges for you, you’ll be much better placed to start thinking about where you want to be and what you want to be doing next. This will help you weigh up any opportunities or propositions, and start being proactive, rather than feeling powerless and having to settle for hoping for the best.
